| HOTELS - GUEST HOUSES - RESTAURANTS
Tourism is gradually catching on in Sri
Lanka once again and you will find a good number of hotels both
in Colombo and along the coastal belt catering to the needs of foreign
tourists and businessmen as well as the upper class of local society.
Many of these hotels have their own Restaurants, Coffee Shops, Karaoke
Bars, Night Clubs and Banquet and Conference Halls as well as Recreational
facilities like Swimming Pools and Tennis Courts. Weddings, Seminars
and Conferences are also arranged and commonly held in the ballrooms
of these hotels, but sometimes have to be booked months in advance.
When booking a room your rate will be usually quoted in US Dollars,
though you can pay in local currency. Taxes will be added to your
final bill and sometimes a 10% service charge is also added.

floor Legends is located, a pub / bar / restaurant (see Pubs and
Cafes). On the 4th floor the Majestic Cinema (Sri Lanka's best)
and only a few shops are located while the remainder of the shops
are situated on levels 1 to 3. In the basement there is a Food Court.
Small eating houses with a variety of food items on sale on a self
service basis. Also in the basement is WonderWorld, the kids play
area. The KFC outlet is located next to the Station Rd. entrance.
While all other malls charge a parking fee, Majestic still allows
(if you can find) free parking. (see the Majestic City floorplan
in the rear section Maps and Floorplans).
Crescat Boulevard
Next to Hotel Lanka Oberoi, Galle Rd.,
Col. 03.
The most prestigious and luxurious shopping
mall in town. It opened late 1997 as part of the expansion plans
of Lanka Oberoi and the development of Crescat Apartments. The complex
is located along Galle Rd. and can be reached from both the Galle
Rd. side as well as from Navam Maw. Where parking at most places
is a problem, Crescat Boulevard is one of the few places where parking
is available in plenty. The Oberoi has its own connection to the
mall so guests can go shopping regardless of the weather condition.
It is also at that level that the mall starts; the Lobby level,
and escalators (or the elevator) will take you down to the two other
floors. Besides the shops and smaller outlets on Lobby Level, there
is also Deli France for a quick snack. The rest of the two floors
all have a variety of shops selling items like natural beauty products,
tea, clothing, shoes, sun glasses, paintings, home décor,
fabric etc. The level 2 has a Keells Supermarket
and the food court comprising of outlets selling coffee and cake
(Cricket Club Express), chicken, pizza, rice dishes, ice cream etc.
It now serves Sri Lankan, Korean, Middle Easters and Mongolian dishes.
(see the Crescat Boulevard floor plan and list of shops in the rear
section Maps and Floorplans).
Unity Plaza
Corner Galle Rd. & Station Rd., Col. 04.
Located next to Majestic City. Only few
shops are worth mentioning: Vijitha Yapa Bookshop with a multimedia
outlet. In the basement, Perera & Sons Bakers, I & E Technics
on the first floor. Has turned into a major place for computer parts,
accessories and computer media such as cd’s. Many shops offer
these items and you have to visit many to find what you want.
Pettah
The Pettah could be best described as
Colombo’s treasure chest. You will probably find just about
any item you are looking for here. The problem however is that
Pettah is a maze of small streets with shops hidden in all corners.
Many shops selling the same kind of items are concentrated in
a particular street. For instance, Sea Street is famous for it’s
gold jewelry, Main street for it’s textiles, Maliban Street
for paper wave, Bankshall Street for chemicals, Keyzer Street
for electronic items and Manning Market for vegetables and livestock.
Although this section on the Pettah will give you a lot of information,
it’s only a fraction of what’s really on sale!
